The statue of Ahu Akivi on the western part of Easter Island; these smaller
status weigh over 16 tons each.
At its height, the small island may have supported over twenty
thousand residents. Over-population quickly depleted the limited resources, the
subsequent economy hardship led to civil war. By the 19th century, less than two
thousand residents remained, fighting over what little was left.
