Unsecured email accounts can be used by unauthorized party to send unsolicited mass emails (called SPAM). Many ISPs now require two passwords for emailing, one for retrieving emails (POP3 or IMAP), the other for sending emails (SMTP).

For simplicity, the two passwords are usually cross-linked: changing one would change the other.
