Fujitsu and Toshiba are the latest notebbok PC makers to announce the recall of Sony-made lithium-ion batteries used in some of their product lines, joining Lenovo, Apple, Dell, and bringing the worldwide number of recalls to over 7.7 million.

The products affected include Fujitsu's LifeBook, Toshiba's Satellite, Toshiba's DynaBook.

Hewlett-Packard Co. stated Monday it will not be issuing a recall. The company said it reviewed its products with Sony batteries and found that the designs were not prone to the overheating issues other companies seem to face.

The risk stems in part from the manufacturing process. The batteries can short-circuit because tiny shards of metal are left in their cells during production, Sony said, causing the batteries to overhead.

If a legitimate copy is not bought within 30 days, the OS will only be able to boot into Windows Safe Mode, and restrict the user to just Internet Explorer for one hour, presumably giving the user one last time to buy Windows Vista online.
