Virus: 2007-December-26

A vicious worm has started to circulate via email pretending to be Christmas/New Year card since 24th December. Because it's a short morphing email that does not have a payload, it is very effective in spreading.

Contained in the email is an URL that points to a web site, the web site in turn points to file for user to download. If allowed to run, it would create a file in the Windows folder, and instructs Windows to run that file during the next start up. If that target file is allowed to run, it configures Windows to allow it to communicate via the Internet, and retrieve further instructions from its hosts.

Please be reminded that unless you are fully aware of the implications, you should not proceed if you are asked to download something in order to do something else, such as getting freebies or view video or fancy New Year ecards.

We have observed a steady decreasing reliability of Streamyx, resulting in intermittent connection problem to some sites.

The phenomenon typically lasts from a few seconds to a few hours, sometimes up to a few days. It is difficult to trace because connections to other sites can be perfectly normal during this time, and that the sites that were dropped not only seem to be random, but the nature of dropped line is also random: sometimes only a few packets are dropped, which manifests as slow performance.

Not only are all Streamyx users affected, interconnect between Streamyx users can also be problematic.

It would almost seem as if some form of filtering devices are being put in place.

TM Net has implemented a restrictive policy to block off SMTP traffic from its dynamic IPs. If you are a Streamyx or TM Net users and you can no longer send emails, please refer to TM Net mail proxy configuration guide for details on how to configure your email client. You may email help@tm.com.my or call 100 and select "Internet Services" for further assistance.

Please note that if you had followed the Infoarch instruction sheet to setup your email client, you do not need to make any changes and your email function would not be affected.

Vulnerability : 2007-Sep-27

If you own an Apple iPhone and it works in the Asia Pacific region and you are not a subscriber to AT&T wireless service, chances are you are holding a hacked iPhone, and it will cease to function when you perform a software update via Apple.

The iPhone is so highly coveted that people who subscribe to other wireless networks have resorted to hacking it either by software or by modifying the hardware. Such modifications will void the iPhone's warranty, and will render the phone unusable with the iPhone 1.1.1 update by permanently displaying the "unsupported SIM card" error message.

Skype service is unstable as the peer-to-peer networks that the service relied on were brought to a halt one-by-one. Skype claimed that although the source of the problem is known, they are puzzled by the scale of its effect: all 220 million Skpe users were affected at one time or another. The network problem may manifest itself in the next few days. Expect interruption if you use Skype service.

The flaw resides in the way the Skype client talks to the server, and it affects all Skype clients downloaded from 2003 onward. As a result, download of Skype application has been suspended until a new client that had rectified the flaw is available.

Virus : 2007-Aug-8

We have seen a significant increase in the W32.Fujacks.B and W32.SillyFDC viruses. They seem to be the most prolific viruses on removable storage media such as flash drives. Their small size allow them to quickly slipped onto pen drives, and infect the host PC when the antivirus software is down.

While mostly harmless, the annoyance factor is very high, since the files that were created by the viruses may make the removable storage media seems inaccessible.

Vulnerability : 2007-July-23

A flaw has been discovered in Apple's iPhone, allowing hackers to obtain e-mails, text messages and phone numbers.

The flaw lies in the Safari web page rendering engine, which can run codes from web site the phone connected to. Hackers can take advantage of this capability by putting malicious codes on the server and tricking users into visiting it.
