Network : 2006-Nov-29

There is a rolling blackout of sort with Streamyx service, where the DSL signals are normal, but PPPoE login attempts are rejected. In a typical DSL modem/router, this problem manifests itself as having the LED indicator light labeled DSL (or ADSL, xDSL, Ready, etc.) on, but the LED indicator light labeled Internet (or PPP, PPPoE, ShowTime, etc.) remain off.

Left to its own devices, the problem may resovle itself in about two weeks time. Calling TMNet helpdesk will shorten it to between 2 to 7 days. Calling Telekom technician will only confirm that the line is ok, who will still refer you to call TMNet helpdesk at 1300-88-9515.

Virus : 2006-Oct-18

If you run Windows and had purchased a video iPod after September 12, 2006, there is a small risk that the iPod may contain a RavMonE.exe virus that could infect your computer.

We normally do not issue an alert over such trivial occurrences, but we make exception for this because of the way Apple shed the responsibilities. We have known no other virus alert issued with such condescension. In Apple’s own words:

We recently discovered that a small number - less than 1% - of the Video iPods available for purchase after September 12, 2006, left our contract manufacturer carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it. So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

Vulnerability : 2006-Aug-11

The security hole that is patched by Microsoft MS06-040 on August 8th is so significant, it prompted the US Department of Homeland Security to issue a public advirosry. At issue is whether this exploit would cause wide-spread damages on the scale of the Blaster worm.

Sample code exists to show would-be hackers how to exploit this vulnerability through buffer overrun on Port 139 and 445. There are also concept worms that probe, attack, take control of the target system, and launch fresh attack from the compromised system.

All systems running unpatched versions of Windows 2000/XP/2003 are at risk.
