Microsoft will no longer support Windows 98, Windows 98 Second
Edition and Windows Millennium Edition from 11th July 2006. In fact,
in Microsoft's June security update, a critical flaw in Windows
98 had been identified, but not patched. Microsoft's recommendation
is for Windows 98 customers to protect themselves by using a firewall
to filter TCP Port 139. This will block attacks attempting to exploit
the Windows Explorer flaw

All of TMNet email servers are down, affecting all dial-up mailboxes,
Streamyx mailboxes, and hosted domain mailboxes. The problem lies
with user authentication; as users can not be authenticated, no
emails can be received.
In addition, their SMTP servers are off-line: no emails can be
sent to @tm.net.my, @streamyx.com, or any of their hosted domains.

One of our routers were down for an hour, caused by a burnt UPS
due to lightning. The problem was resolved, but not without creating
intermittent service disruption between 11:00AM-12:00PM. We apologize
for any inconvenience caused.

Symantec had issued a patch to its Symantec AntiVirus Corporate
Edition v10.x and Symantec Client Security v3.x products, just days
after security researchers had discovered the problem.
The patch are available through the company's Live Update service
and should be applied as soon as possible.

There are now wide-spread intermittent Internet interruption affecting
Streamyx users. Specifically, the Internet space is fragmented,
connection to some destinations are either extremely slow or simply
unreachable.
Virus : 2006-May-24
A large number of email viruses are being sent by TMNet users.
This may have been because some viruses managed to slip through
TMNet's email filter and delivered to the users, resulting in virus
infection for those users without adequate protection.
UPDATE 2006-05-28 : We are now seeing
a significant increased in spams coming from Jaring email servers
as well.
Network : 2006-April-29
We are not sure if this is related, but since the explosion in
Pasir Gudang, there have been A LOT brief power surges and power
trips. The power line quality has definitely worsen. As a result
equipment failure rate has risen significantly.
Virus : 2006-April-24
A number of old viruses, including variants of the old W32.Mytob
virus, have resurfaced. This coincided with a significant increased
in the number of spam emails. The heavy load has affected many email
servers, disrupting emails delivery. Email users may want to double
confirm with their intended receipients to verfiy the receipt of
emails sent within the past few days.
Network : 2006-April-19
Streamyx is behaving very erratically - possibly due to addition
of new routers that are configured incorrectly -with intermittent
connection failure across Johor. Expect wide spread Internet connection
interruption within the next two weeks.
Network : 2006-April-4
Network connectivity in and around JB is spotty due to sporadic
thunder storm in the region.
Virus : 2006-March-14
McAfee's anti-virus software erroneously flagged hundreds of legitimate
executables as a malicious virus, leading some customers to quarantine
or delete the offending files and render applications inoperative.
An error in McAfee's daily virus definition file (dubbed "DAT")
identified the files as W95/CTX, a virus first discovered in 2004.
All editions of McAfee's on-demand-scanning products, including
both the enterprise and consumer versions of VirusScan, were affected.
Among the legitimate files painted as malware were Microsoft's
Excel spreadsheet, Adobe's Flash, the Google Toolbar installer,
several Adaptec drivers, Oracle binaries, and parts of Sun Microsystems'
Java Runtime Environment.
Scam : 2006-March-2
A domain name registration scam is aggressively targeting Malaysian
and Singaporean domain name owners. The scam involves a call from
a company pretending to be an official orginaization. The caller
then tries to trick the owner into transferring the domain or registering
more domain names.
Because the owner is directly contacted, many unsuspecting owners
have fallen prey to this scam, believing that their domain names
is in danger of being hijacked or removed.

TMNet network performance has been degrading steadily since mid-January
(see our Jan 19th Update), primarily due to problems with its DNS
servers. The servers are probably flooded by requests due to the
recent virus outbreaks.
An internal full-function DNS server is needed to permanently resolve
this issue by bypassing TMNet's DNS servers entirely. For users
whom this solution is either impossible or impractical, you may
wish to temporarily use other ISPs name servers. Please note that
Jaring's DNS servers is still open (see our Jan 13th Update) and
their performance is top-notch.

Several variants of the Beagle email viruses are spreading rapidly.
The most vicious has the following characteristics:
The payload comes in the form of an attachment with any of the
following names:
Expect general slow down of Internet access in the new few days.
Network : 2006-Jan-19
A cascade failure has been registered in TMNet network, causing
some Streamyx subscribers to experience intermittent service unavailability.
Vulnerability : 2006-Jan-16
There is a flaw in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP wireless networking
behavior: if it fails to find any wirelss access point, it defaults
to ad-hoc mode and broadcast its name. If Windows firewall is not
active, aremote computer can connect to it wirelessly by assuming
the name, and the connection is considered local.
This vulnerability is not applicable if you perform any of the
followings:
- Enable network firewall (such as Windows XP's built-in firewall)
- Turn off the wireless connection when you're not using it
- Change the wireless setting to run in infrastructure-mode only

There is a problem with Jaring's name server; All Jaring's services
are not available unless you are connected to the Internet directly
through Jaring.
Jaring has long been disallowing external parties to use its name
servers; now it simply refuses to resolve any names, including names
on its own domain. As a result "jaring.my" has effectively
disappeared from the Internet, since the Internet need to be able
to query jaring's name servers to "see" the servers served
by Jaring's name servers.
We expect this problem to be resolved fairly quicky since it's
a simple mistake. Although this is not the first time, nor the last
time, and is something that can be totally prevented if Jaring simply
allows its name servers to be queried by anyone, which is the normal
practice for most ISPs anyway.
